A Global Vision 2015: South Africa

June 10, 2015

Dear Supporters and friends of BOLD Girls USA and South Africa,

I want to share with each of you some exciting news that has transpired over the 2014-2015 school year.  The BOLD Girls program continues to grow both in the U.S. and South Africa, and since last summer when I traveled to South Africa to introduce the program to educators and professionals, the BOLD program is now being implemented in Swaziland and three provinces in South Africa.  At present there are close to 100 girls in South Africa involved in the program from elementary grades through high school.

This year I am returning to South Africa with my colleague and mentor RoLanda Allaha Wilkins, who has expertise in the fields of women and adolescent health/wellness and specializes in youth development and leadership.  She is the director of the Dream Girls program, which serves over 200 girls through the Sacramento County Office of Education. She is the founder and Executive Director of Earth Mama Healing, Inc. a nonprofit that will be supporting our travels to South Africa in August of 2015.

We will be visiting sites where the BOLD Girls program is being implemented in addition to birthing clinics in several provinces. We will be traveling with Fadia Williams, Director of McWilliams Educational Consulting, who has arranged additional visits to schools and sites in Durban, the Eastern and Western Cape.  During this past year we launched the BOLD Global Network, a closed Facebook group where teachers, interns and students share activities, successes and community service experiences.  The BOLD Global Network has provided a forum where girls can support each other and we hope to expand the network so participants can have face-to-face interactions through an international exchange program.

Our date of departure is August 2 and we plan to stay through the 21st of August. We have purchased our international flights, but are seeking donations to reach our goal of earning $5,000.00.  The donations will be used for in country travel and lodging as we visit the three provinces in South Africa.  Additionally, we would like to bring supplies and curriculum that are crucial to the development of the program, along with the gift of a BOLD Girls tee shirt for participants.

Last year the trip was funded by the generous donations of community members, family and friends.  We are seeking to do the same this year.  We want to see relationships develop between girls and teachers at each site so we can begin a movement that will impact girls for years to come.

The best thing about this amazing BOLD venture is you don’t have to be female or famous to donate!

We appreciate your BOLD support.  Please follow the link below to make a donation through Our World Cultural Center/EarthMama Healing, Inc.  Tax I.D. # 27-3875959

With continued gratitude,
